In 1953, Mercedes-Benz announced its plan to build a roadster based on the Ponton sedan. American importer Max Hoffman insisted that the new model should resemble the 300SL coupe as much as possible. The Mercedes-Benz 190SL therefore adopted many styling cues from the 300SL “Gullwing,” particularly the front end and sculpted wings. Primarily designed for the North American market, the production version differed from the 1954 prototype by featuring a floor-mounted gear lever instead of a column shift, a choice better suited to American customers. The hood scoop seen on the prototype was also removed. While initially presented as a sports car, the 190SL is above all a touring roadster, fast yet comfortable, perfect for covering long distances in style. It embodies the “Sport Leicht” philosophy that would later define the SL range as luxury grand tourers.
This example, dating from 1956, is a first-generation model recognizable by its small rear lights and minimal chrome details.
