Austin Healey 3000 MKIII BJ8

Introduced in 1963, the Austin-Healey 3000 Mk III represents the ultimate evolution of the legendary “Big Healey” lineage, which had become a benchmark among post-war British roadsters. More refined than its predecessors, it was powered by a 2,912 cc inline six-cylinder engine producing 150 bhp, thanks to a revised cylinder head and twin SU HD8 carburettors. These improvements endowed the Mk III with outstanding performance for its era, including a top speed approaching 190 km/h (118 mph), while retaining the lively and charismatic character for which the model is renowned. It also benefited from an improved rear suspension, providing better handling and enhanced driving comfort. The interior became noticeably more luxurious, featuring a walnut veneer dashboard, wind-up side windows and a higher standard of finish.
Remaining true to the spirit of the classic British roadster, the Austin-Healey 3000 Mk III perfectly combines timeless elegance, mechanical simplicity and an engaging driving experience. Its long bonnet, distinctive grille and flowing body lines make it instantly recognisable. Production continued until 1967, marking the end of the successful partnership between Austin and Donald Healey.
Built between 17 and 23 February 1965, this Austin-Healey 3000 Mk III is a genuine “Big Healey” that has retained all the elegance for which the model is celebrated. Factory records confirm that it was delivered new in its iconic Healey Blue livery, an emblematic colour that beautifully enhances its timeless design.
Acquired by its current owner around 2015, the car subsequently underwent a comprehensive restoration carried out with exceptional attention to detail. Every stage of the project was meticulously documented, and an extensive photographic record accompanies the car, illustrating the restoration from the bare chassis through to its final reassembly. This comprehensive file is available for inspection upon request.
The restoration encompassed the entire vehicle, including the chassis, bodywork with the reconstruction of all body panels, a complete engine rebuild and the refurbishment of the running gear. The objective was not merely to restore the car’s appearance, but to return it to the outstanding standard that made the Austin-Healey 3000 such a motoring icon.
As the final and most accomplished version of the celebrated “Big Healey”, the Mk III offers a higher level of refinement and comfort than its predecessors. It features a proper centre console, an elegant wood-veneer dashboard and an upgraded interior finish, while fully preserving the sporting character that defines the model.
Beneath its long bonnet lies the legendary inline six-cylinder engine, delivering a captivating exhaust note and an authentic driving experience that perfectly embodies the great British roadsters of the 1960s. Its combination of performance, flexibility and balance makes it equally enjoyable on winding country roads or during long-distance touring.
A true icon of British motoring, this Austin-Healey 3000 Mk III possesses all the qualities sought after by discerning collectors today: an especially attractive original specification and a restoration completed to a very high standard. It represents a rare opportunity to acquire one of the finest British roadsters ever built, combining timeless elegance, genuine sporting character and exceptional driving pleasure.
