Timeless elegance, a legacy of driving pleasure.
Certain motor cars possess the remarkable ability to transcend the passing of time. The Porsche 356 is undoubtedly one of them. More than seventy years after its creation, its graceful silhouette, beautifully restrained design and distinctive mechanical character continue to captivate enthusiasts around the world. The first production car to bear the Porsche name, the 356 was born in 1948 from Ferry Porsche’s vision of the ideal sports car: light, beautifully balanced and capable of delivering exceptional driving pleasure without relying upon excessive power.
Throughout its development, the 356 became increasingly sophisticated, yet never lost sight of the philosophy that had inspired its creation. Introduced in 1963, the 356 C represented the final evolution of Porsche’s original sports car. With numerous refinements, including the adoption of four-wheel disc brakes, it was the culmination of almost fifteen years of continuous development.
Our 1964 example is a particularly appealing expression of this philosophy, combining timeless elegance with a more spirited mechanical character. Having undergone a comprehensive restoration, this 356 C Coupé is beautifully presented in Slate Grey, complemented by a magnificent brown interior. The colour combination is quite exceptional in its understated elegance. The subtle, deep grey finish beautifully accentuates the flowing curves of the bodywork, whilst the warm tones of the interior create an atmosphere of remarkable sophistication. It is a combination that speaks of quiet confidence rather than extravagance, an expression of good taste that feels as appropriate today as it would have done sixty years ago.
Yet beneath this wonderfully refined appearance lies a rather more spirited personality. The celebrated air-cooled flat-four engine has been enhanced with a Big Bore conversion, increasing its capacity to 1,720 cc, together with a pair of Weber carburettors. These modifications raise the quoted output from the original 75 bhp to approximately 110 bhp, a particularly welcome increase in a sports car whose modest weight has always been one of its greatest virtues.
The additional power lends the 356 a noticeably more eager character, promising stronger acceleration and greater flexibility whilst preserving the unmistakable soundtrack and engaging personality of Porsche’s original flat-four engine. It is precisely this combination that makes the car so appealing: the enduring charm of a classic Porsche, the beauty of a comprehensive restoration and a thoughtfully enhanced engine intended to make every journey that little bit more rewarding. For the pleasure of a 356 has never been defined by performance figures alone. It lies in the delicacy of its controls, the lightness of its responses and the wonderfully intimate relationship it establishes between driver, machine and road.
This beautifully restored 1964 Porsche 356 C Coupé will appeal to the enthusiast seeking something rather more meaningful than simply another classic car: an elegant, engaging and thoroughly charming companion, equally rewarding to admire and to drive. A Porsche of exceptional elegance, whose understated beauty conceals a wonderfully spirited character.
