At the beginning of the 1980s, Carroll Shelby found himself at an interesting point in his career: his legendary Mustangs of the 1960s were beginning to command considerable values among collectors. As the original Shelby models became increasingly sought after, Shelby decided to bring back one of his most iconic creations: the GT350 Convertible. The choice of a convertible was no coincidence, as Shelby had always retained a particular affection for the very rare 1966 GT350 Convertibles. At the time, only four examples had been produced, making this body style one of the most exclusive in the entire history of the GT350. Between 1980 and 1982, Shelby therefore commissioned a continuation series of just twelve GT350 Convertibles.
The cars were based on carefully selected 1966 Mustang Convertibles, which were then extensively restored and prepared. They were fitted with 289 “Hi-Po” V8 engines sourced from a stock of brand-new original Ford engines, coupled with either a manual or automatic transmission. Their presentation faithfully echoed the spirit of the original GT350s, notably through the famous Wimbledon White and blue finishes with contrasting stripes. A specific roll bar, Koni suspension and various other components directly inspired by the period Shelby models completed their preparation.
These cars were therefore far more than a simple cosmetic reissue: they were genuine Shelby automobiles built under the authority of Carroll Shelby himself. Their extremely limited production makes them among the rarest Mustangs ever associated with the Shelby name. Each of the twelve examples was assigned a specific Shelby American serial number, continuing the sequence of the 1966 GT350 Convertibles. This direct lineage to the original cars, combined with their exceptionally limited production, gives them a very special place in the history of the Shelby marque.
“Test Driven & Personally Inspected by Carroll Shelby.”
Arriving in Luxembourg in the 1990s, our Shelby GT350 Convertible has remained with the same family ever since, where it has been carefully preserved throughout the years. Well known among members of the Mustang Club Luxembourg, this car occupies a special place among Carroll Shelby’s rare creations. It is believed to be the only known example in Europe and, more importantly, the only one currently offered for sale. The other cars from this highly exclusive series remain in private collections, with some having stayed within the Shelby family itself. This therefore represents an exceptionally rare opportunity for collectors to acquire one of Carroll Shelby’s most exclusive creations, born directly from his desire to revive the spirit of the legendary GT350.
